Ania Chorabik, singer, song writer, model and artist
Dear Shaded Viewers,
The next issue of ZOO magazine is the music issue. I of course wanted to interview Ania. Visit her myspace page and listen to Miss Monroe and the other selections while you read through this piece.

Ania Chorabik's photo taken by Marco dos Santos
DP: Which came first, the modeling or the singing or the art?
AC: I would have to say art in combination with the fascination of music. Like most artists would say, it all began as a child. I was one of those children who loved to draw on walls and make sculptures out of everything around me. I once sculpted "a new universe" out of aluminum foil. It was cool. So ever since my hands never stopped moving…
As for music it has been my fuel through life. I have an uncontrollable talent of learning all lyrics to any song I learn really fast so it all started with miming until I asked myself "why don't I just release the sound?" so I did and started recording in 2004.
Modeling came as an unexpected bullet and changed my world when I was discovered on the subway in Stockholm in 1999. Two years later, after I graduated high school, I did it full time and that move certainly opened many new doors as I found myself on the streets of New York and Paris under serious artistic influence by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.
DP: What were your major music influences growing up? Can you draw upon any incidents in your life that were directly linked to a piece of music?
AC: My first real influence with music came through what was played in my home – pure 60s hits; The Lovin Spoonful, The Drifters, The Temptations, Herman's Hermits etc. I loved those songs and knew all the lyrics by heart even though I didn't even speak English back then. Then came the obsession with Michael Jackson and this because of a boy I was in love with that could dance like him so I urgently had to buy "Dangerous" and was caught up in the game of singing and dancing. Those performances kicked ass, I still have some videos! I should put them on Youtube!
My teenage years were strongly influenced by the strange mix of Nirvana and No Doubt. I thought Nirvana was so real and No Doubt so cool. I still do to this day.
Since I hung out with so many different people and different cultures and different music tastes I was influenced by- and open to everything from rock, rap, pop, classical, R&B and electronic tunes.
After seeing Daft Punk and later on Peaches live I became fascinated with electronic music. I thought it was cool and cocky and a different approach. I love 80s music as well so in 2004 I started recording music with a Swedish producer and together we did just that: electro with a touch of 80s pop. I also adore Vanessa Paradis; I've been in love with her since I first saw her on mtv.
It was love at first sight and I wished with all my heart I could be like her!
So she kind of inspired me as well...
DP: Who are your music icons and how did they affect the music that you create?
AC: Basically strong rebel women that don't give a shit and spit and say fuck but remain true and stay real. Women that will not be controlled by anyone and do as they please. Joan Jett, Madonna, Gwen Stefani in No Doubt, Peaches, Grace Jones, Patti Smith. As well as heavy legends: Michael Jackson, Nirvana and Joy Division._
DP: Are you the composer as well as the singer?
AC: Yes I write all lyrics myself, which I really enjoy. Somehow the words just flow out and I just sit back and watch. I think it comes so easily because I've been writing poems and kept a diary since I was very young. Writing is gold and letters are diamonds.
DP: Can you speak about the other musicians that play with you? How did you find them and how do you work together?
AC: I started working with a Swedish producer and we did many songs together. He's a very talented man and it really warmed me up and gave me the confidence to record and perform. Now I'm taking the time to meet new producers and musicians and everyone seems really enthusiastic about my music, which is an honor and very flattering. I think it's really important to take time to meet the right people to work with, if I am going to release an album I want it to be the best of me.
DP: When was your first performance live and what did that feel like?
AC: My first big live performance was at the club Paris Paris in Paris. It was summer 2006, my friends were there, I was nervous enough to be nonchalantly cool and it was amazing. I was surprised how easy it was and how comfortable it felt. I didn't care about what anyone would think about me, I just cared about my music. I was walking around the club, dancing, jumping, rolling, crawling and digging the music, spreading the vibrations to the audience and clicking with them. It's one of my nicest most genuine moments of music. There was a French movie director in the audience that told me he was so captivated he wanted to shoot my video. Which he did later for my single in Japan.
DP: What was your trip to Tokyo like?

in action
AC: Tokyo was the maddest most powerful trip I've ever made. It was so surreal, I still wonder if it wasn't just a dream. When my manager Vassili and I just started working I told him "Take me to Tokyo pleeeease!" and he said, "I will" I didn't believe it would actually happen…

from Ania's blog post on ASVONF -Bed-diving at Cerulean Tower Hotel
The first time I went was in May last year to record a track for producer/DJShinichi Osawa's upcoming album. There was a lot at stake since I basically had to nail the song right away. But I later found myself signing the contract.

from Ania's blog post on ASVONF Tim, Kato, Vass and Ania, photo of the year!
The second time I went was in August and there was even more pressure as I had to perform for MTV Japan and an audience of 2000 people. Seeing my video being played all around town on all the big screens was so weird I found myself laughing hysterically each time. I even signed my first autographs as an artist! It was a bizarre feeling..._

from Ania's blog post on ASVONF - photo shoot before the concert
DP: How do you think that what you do both with music and art reflects our_times?
AC: I believe in the words "stay true, stay real". I will not be a part of any factory; I will not be molded into "what they want". I will be me. I have my bad sides but I like myself.
In today's stressful, cruel and very superficial world, people need to escape reality and bring back the playful side but also find depth at the same time.
I have a desire to highlight the genius of the simple. The most complex pieces of music and art aren't always the best.I feel that everyone's working, searching and thinking so hard that they maybe forget to look right in front of them. Then again, sometimes I also like to work in codes and not reveal everything to everyone, so only a selected few know what I mean. But that complexion or mystery can also be hidden in the simple things.

Home Made - Ania wore it in Tokyo for a concert
DP: Are you based in Stockholm? Do you think that that has any influence on the music that you create?
AC:I still have a hard time knowing where I am based since I have to move all the time or I'd rot in routine. I want to break free from routine but at the same time I need it to have a balanced life. But yes, I have an apartment in Stockholm and I have my family there. And family comes first. As for music, Stockholm has excellent producers. Recording in Sweden is great, people are very organized and professional, which is what I love when in work. But life wise, my creative soul somehow belongs to Paris. It is in Paris where I have both lost and found my mind and way. So I get my inspiration from elsewhere but sum it all together under organized circumstances in Stockholm.__
DP: How are things going so far with the music and what is in the works for the future?
AC:As I said, I'm spending a lot of time right now traveling to meet the right people, it's looking good and I'm really eager to get to work on my first album._
DP: Did you meet the producer of your dreams yet?
AC: If Quincy Jones is in, I'm down!
More seriously, I'm meeting some great producers, can't give out any names yet but it's looking good, it might even be hard to choose..._
DP: Any tours coming up, who arranges all of that for you?

Self-portrait
AC: I'll be working on my album before I start touring, but can't wait for that too, I love performing!
DP: Where are your t-shirts sold, where can people buy your music?
AC: As for my hand painted t-shirts, I don't know. I have not yet decided what I'm going to do with them. People really want them but I just say "Hey take off your t-shirt and I'll do it now" but I guess that doesn't really work in the long run. So I'm thinking of doing this exclusive edition in time. Or maybe I'll just use them for a future exhibition. Or perhaps they'll just hang in my closet 'til the day I crumble!
But I am also working with a new Swedish brand called Mouyo where I do all the drawings and paintings that are used as prints on the t-shirts. Mouyo is sold in selected stores in Sweden as well as the chain store Stuk www.stuk.se and on www.mouyo.com
As for music, nothing is officially out yet. Only the track I did in Japan called "Push" which is featured on Shinichi Osawa's album "The One" is in stores and the video is on MTV.
You have to be as patient as I am and wait for what is to come…
AC: My favorite quote is: Life beats down and crushes your soul, and art reminds you that you have one.

Gyz la riviere-Martin Cornelis de Waa
Dear Shaded Viewers,
http://www.gyzlariviere.nl/gza/mcdewaal.mp4
VJ/DJ artist, performer , singer in the Netherlands thanks to Klaus van den Berg, I now know who he is.
Multi-disciplinary Artist
Martin Cornelis de Waal (Rotterdam, 1962), after studying at the Christian Social Academy (De IJsselpoort) in Kampen, moves into painting at the Utrecht University for the Arts, but after the study he never touches a paintbrush again. “I thought ‘fuck painting,’ and went ahead and did more of what I really felt like doing. I work according to the Bauhaus method (wherein artists explore creativity in the broadest sense of the word, ed.) I’m a multi-disciplinary artist.”
The search leads to de Waal photographing and alternating between being an art director, costume designer, DJ, VJ, singer/songwriter, choreographer, cosmetician, stylist, model, performer, set designer and director. He directs the Aquarius video for the Party Animals, works together with commercial director Thed Lenssen and makes commercials for Seat and the Rabobank.
In 2001, he breaks through with the photo series Global Citizen, consisting of alienating portraits, through which he explores the boundaries of his personality. De Waal has his lips injected with silicone and has the skin of his forehead filled in. Through computer manipulation, he combines his own face with those of others, resulting in a universal face. This becomes the central theme of the work of de Waal, and in 2006 Torch Gallery exhibits a retrospective of his work. In a previous interview, de Waal comments about his art, “People need something to hold on to, but nothing in life is certain. I gnaw away at that with a never-ending series of reflective images. Moralistic art is positive art. But it’s a struggle to the bitter end.”
De Waal exhibits regularly in The Netherlands and abroad.

Maria de Medeiros awarded UNESCO Artist for peace
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Difficult decision tonight because, on the one hand Maria de Medeiros was being awarded the UNESCO Artist for Peace and it was the first time that UNESCO ever designated a Portuguese national as an "Artiste de l'UNESCO. Maria gave a 90 minute concert after and at the same time Waris is in town for the screening of The Darjeeling Limited and I was looking forward to seeing him and meeting Wes Anderson. But, I could only be one place and not two. Why did they both have to fall on the exact day at the exact time?

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, Maria and the Director-General of UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura.
Along with the beautiful voice of Maria, her musicians: Pascal Salmon on piano, Edmundo Carneiro, percussionist from Brazil, Emek Evci were all amazing.

I cannot tell from the back of his head if Maria is speaking with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho or the head of the Portuguese bank, I'm speaking with Maria's husband, Agusti Camps.
There was a reception after and everyone was asking Maria to sign their programs. I loved this woman, she went once, Maria signed it and then....she was back again for her friend.

Chez Costas Argiriou and last night in Athens
Dear Shaded Viewers,
For my last night in Athens, our music master, Costas Argiriou invited Antoine Asseraf and I to his home for dinner with our friends from Athens. In the course of the evening he introduced us to the amazing work of Clara Rockmore (theremin) and Alvin Lucier (brain amplifier)
"In the mid 1930's, Leon Theremin built two custom instruments: one for his patroness Lucie Bigelow Rosen, and another similar one for Clara Rockmore. These instruments were more elaborate than the RCA theremins and had, among other things, several different timbre settings. Thereminist Howard Mossman, who has been a tireless supporter and promoter of the theremin for longer than most of us have been alive. It's an amazing instrument and if you are curious, please visit http://www.peterpringle.com/customtheremin.html to learn more. Costas just bought the instrument and is learning how to play it.
"Alvin Lucier has pioneered in many areas of music composition and performance, including the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes. His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by means of close tunings with pure tones, sound waves are caused to spin through space."
Costas is working on the soundtrack for the making of the festival d'Hyeres 2007, he also created the original soundtrack for the festival d'Hyeres 2006.

Costas Argiriou at home and last look at my room at the Athens Hilton, which I must say is far superior than any other Hilton I've ever stayed in.

WHITE SOUL At home with Philippe Cohen Solal and Prisca Lobjoy
Dear Shaded Viewers,

Philipe Cohen Solal, Luna and Prisca Lobjoy at home
On the 29th of October The Moonshine Sessions $olal Presents will be released. Today I went to visit Philippe Cohen Solal (Gotan Project) and his wife, the filmmaker, Prisca Lobjoy. I guess you can say that we are old friends. Luna, their daughter, pictured in the middle, was a baby the last time that I saw her. I remember the beautiful announcement of her birth. Today is her 15th birthday. Philippe toured extensively with Gotan Project. He is currently planning the world tour of Moonshine Sessions. One day a week ago or so I received a link to Luna, Moonshine Sessions and was so delighted that I could not stop playing it. More about our visit later.
"It was to Nashville that the native Parisian travelled with his guitar to exorcise his personal demons, he found a haven in the legendary Three Trees Studio Tennessee where under the influence of Moonshine and in the company of Bucky Baxter's trusted friends and musicians he completed his new album."
I might add that Bucky Baxter played assorted guitars (steel, slide, dobro, etc.) with Bob Dylan to give Dylan's band a softer, more country like sound. Bucky Baxter felt like Moonshine Sessions, both the album and the film, were blessed from above. I think he's right.
YOU CAN WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO "LUNA'S SONG":

The album was recorded in Nashville with the best blue grass musicians Philippe could find. The single Luna was named after their daughter, and Prisca made the video that I am just about to pop into my DVD.

Moonshine Sessions -Luna's Song
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Philippe Cohen Solal and his wife Prisca Lobjoy were two of the first people that I met when I moved to Paris 17 years ago. Philippe at the time was working for Virgin doing the sound tracks for films and he knows more about music then about 100 people combined. Among other things he is one of the founders of the very popular sound, Gotan Project. Luna is the name of Prisca and Philippe's daughter and Prisca directed the Moonshine Sessions-Luna's song. That is Philippe performing.
