Shoji in front of his photographs at the festival d'Hyeres
Dear Shaded Viewers,
On the last day of the festival I asked Shoji to talk me through his festival pictures from 2005. Shoji had an interesting beginning to his career. He was working for Vivienne Westwood in London when he was proposed a job taking street pictures for the Japanese magazine, Street. At that time he did not even own a camera. His first photgraphic job ended up as an entire 30 page magazine. He has been workiing as a photographer ever since. Currently he resides in Paris where he does casting as well as photographs.

Justin Morin takes embroidery to a high art
Dear Shaded Viewers,
I've been admiring Justin Morin's embroideries for several years now and earlier this month he had an installation at the festival d'Hyeres. In addition to the embroideries he introduced his ceramic hearts with little slogans, his favorite is bad kisser.

Jaap Scheeren and the extreme make-over
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Jaap Scheeren was one of the winners of this year's photography contest at the festival d'Hyeres. The first image is of a picture in his book 'The Black Hole' which dealt with people and their depression. On the lighter side is the conversation we had about the extreme make-over of a carrot.

Tuomas & Anna Laitinen on the first fashion image that they can remember that really inspired them
Dear Shaded Viewers,
I visited the sister and brother design team, Tuomas & Anna Laitinen the day that I arrived at the festival d'Hyeres and asked them if they could remember what first got them inspired to enter into fashion. Aside from their mom, this is what they had to say:

Michel Mallard and Jason Schmidt direct the making of the H at the 2006 Festival d'Hyeres
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Around the last day of the 2006 edition of the festival d'Hyeres, Michel Mallard got the idea that it could be great if Jason Schmidt, the photographer known for his monumental group photographs, did a peopleized image of an H for Hyeres. You might remember the V cover that he did a little while ago?

Top left-Ghosts by Romain Kremer, long story, rain, dance troupe left...Ghosts lived on at the villa. Thomas, team shooter...Tuomas and Anna, winners of the special mention, all hanging out on the lawn at the villa. DP last dinner in front of Ann's exhibition. Jean Pierre Blanc and Michel Mallard at the beach. Back of John Phillips in the town where we encountered a man of great style. John Phillips with Sebastien's chaise outside his fan's room, DP on the beach, this is as close as I will ever get to the beach... Antoine and his camera, Maida and I at the opening. Antoine, Donald and I after the awards, Micheal and Antoine, NVU with JP on the terrace, JP and Maida at the opening. The set for the 2006 Hyeres fashion show was pretty impressive. We still don't know why none of the designers used the blue lights. Last image the fashion jury.

Manish Arora and Rohit Bal were among the six Indian designers selected by Maria Luisa to attend the Indian evening at the 21st edition of the festival d'Hyeres.
Dear Shaded Viewers,
This year was the first time that the President of the Fashion Design Council of India attended the festival of Hyeres. Mrs. Rathi Vinay Jha arrived with the six designers chosen by Maria Luisa at the recent Delhi Fashion Week. I shared a few moments under the trees of the villa with two of the designers from New Delhi. Rohit Bal and Manish Arora. Also at Hyeres were Rajesh Pratap Singh, Anju Modi and Anamika were among the six.

Aurore Thibout won the prize from the city of Hyeres
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Every year the city of Hyeres votes for their favorite designer, this year the prize went to Aurore Thibout. We were all with huge smiles when the Mayor walked on stage. He's not been feeling that well lately and none of us thought that he would be able to make it to the 21st edition of the festival.

Tuomas & Anna Laitinen won Special Mention and the unannounced best dressed designer award at the 21st edition of the Festival d'Hyeres
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Special mention went to brother and sister design duo, Tuomas and Anna Laitinen. This prize was strongly suppported by special guest of the festival, Ann Demeulemeester.
If there was a cool award and a best dressed designer award, it would have been their's. They were the favorite of many and the reaction among the buyers was that if there was one collection that was ready to sell, this was it.
The cut of the short grey puff jacket is near perfection.

Julien Dossena won the special jury prize and the 15,000 euros 1,2,3 prize at the 21st edition of the Festival d'Hyeres
Dear Shaded Viewers,
The chou chou of the festival was Julien Dossena, the winner of the special jury prize and the l,2,3 prize. My personal favorite from his collection was the print dress with the seeweed sweater.
This is Julien's first collection and it came as a bit of a shock for him to hear his name called out not once but twice.
I might add that apart from his talent he is also generous and quite sweet. Romain Kremer had a problem with the sewing machine and when I asked Julien if he could lend him his, it took him less than one second to respond and to help out.

Anthony Vaccarello-Grand Jury Prize winner at the 21st edition of the festival d'Hyeres
Dear Shaded Viewers,
For the first time in the history of the festival the jury prize winner walked off with more than a potted palm, 15,000 euros to be exact.
It took three hours of debate to come up with the winner for the grand jury prize and most likely what convinced them was Anthony's obsession with technique. What I would love to see in the future is Anthony working with Ann Demeulemeester and giving a more streamlined edge to his silhouettes. Congratulations Anthony.
I was speaking with the director of La Cambre after the show and he was very happy to see La Cambre in the selection again this year and of course super proud that Anthony was the winner.
