Galerie Nordenhake, Stockholm -HÅKAN REHNBERG And He Stutters

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Image

HÅKAN REHNBERG
AND HE STUTTERS
OCTOBER 4 – NOVEMBER 3, 2007

Galerie Nordenhake is very pleased to present a solo exhibition And he stutters by Swedish artist Håkan Rehnberg. The show presents recent sculptures made of glass, aluminium and steel, as well as paintings on acrylic glass from the Fading series.

Rehnberg’s sculptures reflect ideas about architecture. The viewer’s body meets the sculpture in its reflection on the glass whilst the surrounding architecture is drawn into the work. The title And he stutters addresses the work’s personal, verbal and semiotic aspects. Fragments of words are repeated. The stuttering draws out time resulting in something else formed in the resulting space. The sculptures and paintings develop an interdependence through the artist’s aesthetic practice. Each stroke of paint is clearly defined on the plexi surface in the same way that each element in the sculptures reveals traces of its function.

Håkan Rehnberg’s work is, it can be claimed, unforgiving and hides nothing. Each stroke of paint is definitive and cannot be changed: all is visible, nothing is hidden. Each gesture represents a fragment rather than a romantic expression.

Håkan Rehnberg was born 1953 in Göteborg. He lives and works in Stockholm. He has been chairman of Royal Academy of Fine Arts since 2000. Rehnberg has exhibited widely both in Sweden and internationally, including Studio A, Otterndorf, Museum gegenstandsfreier Kunst (Germany), Sønderjyllands Kunstmuseum, (Denmark), Reykavik Art Museum (Iceland), Helsinki City Art Museum (Finland), Centre Culturel Suédois (France). Venues in Sweden include Moderna Museet, Malmö Konstmuseum, Millesgården, Eskilstuna Konsthall, Rooseum, Wanås slottspark, and Liljevalchs Konsthall.

Opening: Thursday October 4, 2007, 17.00-20.00
Exhibition period: October 5 - November 3, 2007
Installation views are available after the opening at www.nordenhake.com

A day at White in Milan

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Robbforbreakfast
Robb Young is my dear friend as you have probably noticed and I cannot resist photographing him when ever he is around. I even dared to photograph him at breakfast when it was just too early...

For the past few seasons WHITE created 12 hours which is a space dedicated to one designer for each of the days of the White Fair. The designers have a great exhibition space where they can meet the press and buyers for 12 hours. Todd Lynn had the space today and we enjoyed a little chat about how his business has been growing over these past few years.

Julien Bertic reports from Milan - Dolce and Fendi and White Club press conference Friday at 17h

Dear Diane, Dear Shaded Viewers

The main themes coming out of Milan fashion week have been an emphasis on evening wear, bright colors, prints and layering. Basically today people are visiting showrooms and trade shows and getting ready to move the fashion pilgrimage on to Paris where all begins on Sunday.

Quite surprising for Dolce & Gabbana was their use of damask fabrics in the form of tulip shaped skirts, and their response to two of the main Milan themes of handpainted fabrics for cocktail and full length evening dresses.

DINO DINCO : A QUICK RECAP / NIGHTCAP

Dammit, Thomas, you're fast. I took a cab straight back to my hotel after the YWIW screening...grabbed some food at the deli next door....went to my room and Thomas had already posted his photos below. Sha-schwing!!!!

Upon my arrival at the Tribeca Grand, I met up with all the Paper Mag people. Diane's longtime friend, the artist Pat Kurs, introduced herself to me. So stylish, so beautiful. She shot a few quick pictures of me before taking hold of my arm and physically directing me to kneel down in front of her. Initially, I thought, "Well, if she wants to get into this right here, so publicly, I mean, it's kinda new for me, but I'm down...." It's not considered cheating if you're traveling, right? She then kneels down in front of me, so that we're both on the floor, eye to eye. Over the noise of the cocktail party, she begins directing me, "Okay, look down, now look up with your eyes. Okay...again." I'm thinking, "Wow, I love her."

Img_1951

SKYE vodka had sponsored the event. That's great if you like vodka, however my experience is that it makes me violent. (The police reports have long been sealed.) Emily from Paper asked me if I wanted a drink and I explained to her my predicament. She's like, "Wow!" I'm like, "Yeah. You don't want that here." She kindly went off to the other bar to get me something else...

David introduced me and I explained quickly what YOU WEAR IT WELL was all about. Not surprisingly, most seemed to be familiar with A Shaded View. I was really happy that Marcelo Krasilcic introduced himself to me, as he seems like someone I should have met a long time ago. Without haste, I started gushing about how much I loved Brazil.

I didn't have time to take any photos but I had asked Pat to do so and it appears that she was working hard. However, I made sure to take this one, asking everyone to wave to Diane:

Img_1204

(It almost looks like a big fat rollercoaster car just about to plummet down a terrifying drop...)

It was cool to hear people clapping after each and every film. At most screenings, people typically wait until the end, as if they're attending the opera. Things were going smoothly, until half the way through the screening, when a young woman decided to try out some new comedy material. She would comment loudly here and there, gaining frequency as the screening went on. Much like an enthusiastic redneck at a local football game, she hollered "Yo....G!!" upon reading the title credit that the model wore a suit by Yohji Yamamoto in the SHOWstudio film with Alexander McQueen. I instantly imagined her wearing one of those foam baseball hats (in turquoise, no less), with two cans of cheap beer suspended atop either side and tubes running from the beer cans and into her mouth. As the film from Maison Martin Margiela ended, a couple of people began to clap until Spice Girl said, "Come onnnnnn, people! Give it up for Marrgiellluhhhhh....!" You can only imagine how many "sssshes" flew around her. "Don't Ssssh me," she declared and mumbled something under her breath.

Img_1939Img_1932

I was sitting in the backrow, with the uber-lovely Lauren Cerand (of www.luxlotus.com), waiting for someone to retaliate. Upon her next outburst (which escapes me but no less profound that her previous offerings), a young male fashion voice screamed, "Shut up, already!" "No, youuu shut up," she replied, "it's fashion! Shit!" I kept saying to myself over and over, "Please start a fist fight. Please start a fist fight. Please launch sample sale accessories and manpurses across the screening room...."

It would have totally made my night to see an outburst more akin to the dusty sidelines of a demolition derby than one would expect at a tony New York hotel. And so I waited. And waited. I even waited through the guy who felt the need to make loud orgasm sounds (with his mouth, I think) through the silent "Sylvain Fuckin' Hostile" film. (He garnered way more laughs than Spice Girl, in case you're keeping score.) But alas, these weren't cholas from rival gangs at the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet, arming themselves to duke it out while "Led Zepagain" (the Led Zepplin tribute band) filled the air with "Stairway to Heaven." These were sophisticated fans of fashion and film, so I'm guessing they settled the matter on the dancefloor, with Diplo watching from above and playing an unreleased single from M.I.A.

This weeks New Yorker magazine does a profile on Kim Hastreiter, the co-founder with David Hershkovits of Paper Magazine. I'm waiting for the magazine to make it to Paris so I can enjoy the read.

I found this image on the web today from Knotoryus. When I was at LFW I participated in Nick Knights SHOWstudio interactive video project, The Replensihing Body. I never ever dance anymore so this is truly a rare moment that I shared with Judy Blame. I wish that I had been a better actress and had been able to keep a straight face like Judy instead of falling into constant laughter.

Stedelijk Museum

ANDY WARHOL – Other Voices, Other Rooms
à invitation press lunch & press preview
12 October 2007 – 13 January 2008

Forty years after the first major European Warhol exhibition in Amsterdam, the Stedelijk Museum has organised an exhibition to shed new light on the oeuvre of the celebrated Pop Art master. With film, photography, video and famous icons ranging from Marilyn Monroe, Mao and Campbell Soup Cans, Andy Warhol – Other Voices, Other Rooms is a window onto the artistic thinking of this trendsetting artist, revealing the ‘conceptual soul’ of his work.
You are most welcome to attend the press preview on Thursday October 11th at 1 p.m. Museum director Gijs van Tuyl and guest curator Eva Meyer-Hermann will give insight in the backgrounds of the exhibition, followed by a guided tour.

In his art, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) merged the public with the personal and glamour and stardom with everyday life. He predicted that everyone would have their fifteen minutes of fame, virtually foreseeing Idols and YouTube. With 27 films, rarely screened video tapes and audio recordings of Warhol himself, and archive material, this exhibition zooms in on Warhol’s voyeurism, the mundane, the individual and the eradication of distinctions between high and low culture.
Visitors literally receive a ‘red carpet welcome’ to the exhibition, treated to a barrage of paparazzi-style camera flashes as their entrance is photographed. Music by The Velvet Underground, the band Warhol launched from his famous Factory, accompanies visitors as they roam through a film landscape that includes Screen Tests, Sleep, Blow Job, The Chelsea Girls, Kitchen and Mrs. Warhol. These films were Warhol’s experiments – secluded behind the camera, he shows people’s behaviour in all types of situations, without intervening, using time and observation as his ingredients. This land-scape leads to the poetic installation Silver Clouds, which, in contrast to the films is dreamy and calm.
The heart of the exhibition is the Warhol Cosmos, which highlights the master’s thinking and way of working. In addition to famous icons, the Factory Diaries, in which Warhol captured his life in the sixties, seventies and eighties with an imperturbable eye for detail, and objects from the Time Capsules play a significant role. Once again, drawings, photos and rare archive material are presented alongside audio fragments of luminaries such as Edie Sedgwick, Mick Jagger and Man Ray.
The final section of the exhibition synchronously presents all the material that Warhol produced for television – which was the latest medium in his lifetime. Now, he projects his voyeurism onto everyone, stars and ordinary people alike, in the medium that seemed best suited to the job. In this section, the museum created The Studio Room, where visitors can take a Factory-like screen test.
The exhibition is a co production with the Andy Warhol Museum, one of the four Carnegie museums of Pittsburgh, and is on view at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm from 9 February to 4 May 2008. The exhibition is accompanied by the Andy Warhol Newspaper, a special issue of Blend Magazine and, in December, a catalogue (NAi Publishers). Membership of the Andy Warhol Club provides unlimited free entrance to the exhibition and activities. See also: www.andywarholclub.nl.
