Wolfgang Tillmans at Maureen Paley
Dear Shaded Viewers

WOLFGANG TILLMANS Photocopy (Barnaby) 1994
Last night Maureen Paley presented the first solo exhibition in the UK by Wolfgang Tillmans
since Truth Study Centre in 2005, and his sixth at Maureen Paley since 1993.
An exhibition in two parts, the installation in the ground floor gallery comprises work that oscillates between black and white and almost monochrome colour photographs like Die Schwärze, which depicts a melting glacier’s majestic curve around a black, snow capped mountain. Surfaces vary from photographic paper, ink jet prints and photocopies to the bent and creased photographs from his ongoing sculptural series, Lighter. Tillmans has produced the Lighter series without a camera, and as with all his photographs he considers the resulting works as objects. This process of bending and folding lifts the work further out of the two dimensions of the photographic image and into the space of the room where they are able to reflect and interact. In a recent interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist, Tillmans described these works as “compositions, but, at the same time, an object has been inserted into them”*

Wolfgang's photo and the video of the snail coming out of its shell is in real time. I was so enchanted by the seductive movement of the snail that I watched it several times. I'm such a city person that I doubt that I ever saw that happen in real life.

THere is something about simplicity that ='s power. You only watched one action in all of Wolfgang's video's like the Mercedes symbol turning in the blue sky, the snail or the peas boiling on the stove. It was like a meditation.
Maureen Paley tells DAZED DIGITAL: “Wolfgang Tillmans’ exhibitions are always very special for me. He has used the gallery as a place for experimentation and has staged a number of important shows with me that have always broken new ground in his work. His current show should be very exciting.”

Wil and Mei Hui, and it was great to see my old friend Greogorio Magnani, it's been at least one decade or more...we met in Milan in the mid eighties.
Following the Private View at MAUREEN PALEY 21 Herald Street E2 6JT, there was a dinner at the
BISTROTHEQUE 23-27 Wadeson Street E2 9DR hosted by Maureen Paley in honour of Wolfgang Tillmans, I saw people there that I had not seen in decades and it was a real pleasure.
