RACHEL MARIE WALSH ON FRANCIS MONTESINOS AT MADRID FASHION WEEK
Dear Diane and Shaded viewers,
A solar system fashioned from fresh flowers adorned the crepuscular catwalk of the Francis Montesinos show this morning. The backdrop and lighting were initial evidence of how he saw his spring 2009 muse: feminine, romantic and out of this world pretty. Models sported the signature plaited bun of Star Wars’ princess Leia and long silver earrings shaped like stars and the rings of Saturn. No astronaut suits for the Montesinos girl, though, she like wispy chiffon layers and elaborately croched wool swishing in her wake. She is also a fan of denim, in indigo or stonewash, and the bootleg jean is back and high-waisted, as far as she’s concerned.
Asymmetry is a definite trend for next season and was the dominant means of holding one’s fluttery dress up at Montesinos (though it let one poor model down). Pleats and ribbing were also prevalent on dresses and trousers. For some more structured looks, pinstripe blazers and sleeveless tailcoats were thrown over dresses, before the show went into full-on fantasy mode with gold and silver sequined pastel evening gowns. All photos by Juan Echeverría.
