Blue Victory, Red dress ?

Dear Shadies and Shadettes,

As a few of you may well be aware, the Democratic Party candidate, Barack Obama,  won the U.S. Elections 2 days ago. As a few more of you may know, he has a wife, Michelle Obama. And last but not least, some of you may know that, traditionnally, the color of the Democratic Party is blue (whereas the Republican color  is red).

All this has launched a great controversy because of the dress Michelle Obama wore on victory night :

This is a Narciso Rodriguez dress.
Some people have called it red, some people have called it ugly, some have called it hellish.

How would you call it ? Flattering ? Bi-Partisan ?
Now this kind of discussion has never have taken place with Laura Bush's outfits, and that's how you know change really is coming.

thank god it wasn't another powersuit. i'm sure she had bigger things on her mind than a dress right then.

but seriously... where do these powersuits come from? ross? marshalls? dressbarn?

Thankfully she does not wear many jacket and skirt suits like most of the first ladies. What a hideous look!
Michelle has some great style and I think she will in some ways bring back a fashionable sensibility to the White House as a modern day Jackie O.

its the stupid panels that were added to the dress to make her look not so hippy. the plan backfired. her, her stylist and narcisco should be shot with no last rights.

I actually liked it and thought that is was pretty forward for a first lady. A lot of folks here in NYC did NOT like it. Oh well.

Red? Blue? Jeez, can we move past this red state/blue state idea. It is what has kept our country so divided for so long and we need to move past it now.

I am a Democrat and my favorite color is red. All that says is that my favorite color is red.

I did NOT like that the whole family was color coordinated. Little silly. Red/black for everyone.

Maybe the red was a Maoist statement. After all, Obama used the term "righteous wind" in one of his speeches which is lifted directly from Mao's Little Red Book. As a Maoist myself, I'm thrilled! But still not sure about the dress. We love Narciso, though.

Initially, the choice was a surprise. I just wasn't quite sure what was going on, but it grew on me the longer I kept watching. After a minute or so, I actually liked it because it wasn't some boring outfit, and I like both red and black. She took a chance, showed some style and the family was just so cute and color coordinated.

It was an unexpected choice but, I thought, it still had style and class.

Plus, I know a Canadian who is very upset that in the States we equate red as conservative and blue and liberal. It's the reverse in Canada: http://www.terrepolitique.com/en/2008/09/26/elections-canada-2008/ ;) So maybe the color choice was a hat tip to our neighbors up north?
