From 2003-2006 I handmade 500 miniature couture-like gowns from felt out of the frustration of not being able to create them life size. I have been designing clothes since I was seven and worked as a designer of women's dresses and then juniour sportswear from the time I was 13-18. In my later 20's, after designing a collection and styling for Trent Reznor of the band Nine Inch Nails, I took all the money I made and started a mens & womens sportswear collection called DOM CASUAL. I went out of business after being sued by American Airlines for stealing their day-glo blue blankets and turning them into short sexy dresses with condom pockets. It made for great press, but officially ended my designing career- at least in the real world. A few years later, while playing Barbie's with my niece, I started taking scraps of fabric and draping them on the dolls- thus my fever was reborn and I began to make dozens of dresses out of felt which is VERY moldable and perfect for the small size I was working in. I went out and bought 5 Black & Asian Barbie dolls, the Black one named Christie. I decided to photograph each outfit I made and started building small lit sets and thinking in terms of Avedon meets Mugler meets Meisel meets Toledo in a Russ Meyer meets Irving Penn dream. I also decided to photograph the images solarized so they looked more like paintings and almost life like. After about 2 years of shooting, I had amassed a huge body of images and started showing them. My friend the illustrator/artist Michael Economy convinced me to show them and came up with the name for the show, GET CHRISTY SUPERSTAR. MAC Cosmetics was kind enough to sponsor my show and I had it in San FranDisco at Ver-Unica in July of 2006. I still design about 20 sketchbooks worth of clothes a year, but these 500 miniature dresses, coats and accessories will always remain my proudest achievment because I designed them for me really, not for a company or client. Therefore I was free to do whatever I wanted and for a stubborn Leo that is pure bliss.

Barbie turns 50

Barbie

Dear Shaded Viewers,

50 years ago Barbie made her debut at a New York toy fair, now....she turns 50. She's worked with everyone from Prada, Azzedine Alaia, Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood and Manolo Blahnik, just to name a few.

Barbie logo

To celebrate her 50th , Mattel UK has partnered with LA-based Jeremy Scott to produce a clothing collection inspired by Barbie which will have an exclusive debut at Colette on March 12th during Paris fashion week. Other new partnerships include a 3 year partnership starting in February with CFDA and also sponsoring IMG's Mercedes-Benz Fashion week in NYC. Also in January House of Barbie opens in Shanghai, 35,000 sq ft , 8 floors, including a spa, runway and restaurants.

BETC Le Livre

Dear Shadies N' Shadettes,

Chance is a funny thing.
As some of you noticed, it is impossible right now to access the blog from the usual ashadedviewonfashion.com, ashadedview.com or asvof.com.

Only dianepernet.typepad.com works.
Administrative red tape is preventing us from solving this as fast as we wish we could.
This will probably not be resolved before the end of this week.
So pass the word.

Betccover

Here's chance going the other way though:

Mega-advertising agency BETC EuroRSCG, responsible for Evian, Air France, Petit Bateau, Louis Vuitton, McDonald's and other campaigns, and whose founding members we've had the pleasure of meeting (Rémi Babinet, the "B" in BETC was a photo jury member at this year's Hyères festival, and Eric Tong Cuong, the "TC", was a key jury member of our very own ASVOFF festival) just released its impressive retrospective book.

As chance would have it, both Diane and I are in the book, though at the time the pictures were taken, we did not know each other...

Betcdiane
Betcantoine

Of course, as chance would have it, we met for the first time in front of BETC.
