Dear Shaded Viewers,
In 2008 Yury Toroptsov was given a solo show at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris. His series, "The House of Baba Yaga" was shown at Paris Photo in 2008. From April 30 through July 4th 2010 "THe House of Baba Yaga" will be on display at the municipal park of Sainte Genevieve des Bois, a Russian historical suburb of Paris. Last summer he exhibited at the Rencontres d'Arles.

"The House of Baba Yaga" is a journey to the land of the photographer's childhood memories in search of answers. The Russian born photographer searches for the common denominator between his childhood in Vladivostok and the past ten years of his life in Paris through people and their identity and the permanence of myths.
Yuri makes it a ritual to spend a few weeks in his family hourse each year , the village is lost in the Siberian jungle. THe houses have started to resemble that of Baba Yaga, a character from Russian fairy tales, a witch who kidnaps and eats children. With a mysterious light banal objects like pots and jars scattered all over the place become alive. He's no longer afraid of the witch and her magic territory is now occupied by two baby girls, his nieces.

ACTION PANTS: The FAshion Rules! of Performance Art, by Alex Murray-leslie
Dear Diane, Dear Shaded Viewers,
Last week I was performing as assistant to artist-talk-show-host, Ann-Liv Young, in a scene during our art-performance piece "The Naked Performer" * @ Inkonst, Malmo, Sweden. I wanted to share with you our outfits from the final scene....where we climbed on top of Ikea looking pedestals to create our take on "Action Pants", with 2 audience members cutting out our crotches live, a pair of scissors in hand, connected to contact microphones and the cutting sound resonating through the space. Our "Action pants" are a VERY inspired/homage to VALIE EXPORT's "Action Pants: Genital Panic" performance and photo series from 1969. I took this photo of No-Dancer Krõõt Juurak backstage after the show.
x @alexichick (* "The Naked Performer" by Chicks on Speed @ Inkonst were Melissa Logan, A.L. Steiner, Krõõt Juurak, Nadine Jessen, me and Ann-Liv Young.)

BRUSSELS 28TH INTERNATIONAL FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL - TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI
Dear Shaded Viewers,
The 28th edition of Brussels' International Fantastic Film festival is only one week away and I can't wait to make myself feel scared again! Call me a wimp, but despite my love of horror movies -particularly gore flicks as they are so grotesque- you'll probably catch me slightly out of breath and hiding behind my notes during most of the screenings... Ok, I will definitely try to overcome my fear of obscurity, nasty deaths, sadistic children and dismembered bodies this time around. There are several highlights this year, including Max Sender's Christopher Roth, Sophie Barthes' Cold Souls and Julius Kemp's Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre. A personal favourite is the Fantastic Night taking place on the 10th of April and starting at midnight. Expect cheers and screams from a devoted audience as it will be one of the best opportunities to watch terrifying films until the early hours.
Best,
Philippe
