INTRODUCING: FILIPPO SPREAFICO AND HIS CRISIS!!
One strange night, while I was living in London in February of 2011, I randomly met a bright, young and talkative Italian, who was in his last year at University College London, finishing his B.A. in Anthropology. At a certain point in the conversation, I started cracking jokes about the then Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi and the humorous love-hate relationship that Italians seem to have with him. Filippo informed me that in fact he was in the process of writing his thesis on Berlusconi and proceeded to tell me a series of funny stories and facts about the flamboyant and omnipresent Italian leader.
About a year later, in February of 2012, Filippo contacted me and told me he wanted to learn more about filmmaking and expressed his interest in possibly working with me. Around this time, having finished University, he had moved back to his native Lake Como, and was in a bit of a personal "skyfall" of sorts. In the following weeks, as a way for him to venture into filmmaking and get out of his personal "C®isis!!", I suggested editing found footage from news and other sources, to expand on some of the ideas of his thesis in a new medium by creating a "filmic essay".
The result of this exercise was Filippo's film C®isis!!, a clever combination of political satire, academic musings, and commentary on modern political theatrics and performance. The film features appearance from across the geopolitical landscape such as Angela Merkel, Barak Obama, Saddam Hussein, Ronald Reagan, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, Dmitry Medvedev, as well as many more. To commemorate Berlusconi's recent engagement and his plausible return as Prime MInister of Italy in February, I thought it would be the perfect time to post the film.
Here is a brief summary of the film:
"C®isis! is about connection and disconnection. It reflects on what kinds of links the internet offers and how to expose them with the practice of the montage. The multiplicity of the narratives reflects the eclecticism through which politicians entertain side relationships that escape the public conscious. The intertwining of events —and their apparent unrelatedness— from Berlusconi to Putin, from the Greeks protesting in Athens’s Syntagma square to Gaddafi’s Libya, are composed in an abrupt fashion to replicate the incursion that information exercits on our everyday lives. An exercise in stealing and appropriation, C®isis revitalizes stuffy and culturally irreversible visual heritage by its use of evidently copyrighted material. A montage that comes as it disappears, telling a story that could or could not exist."
