Dazed x Protein: Trash Fashion Forum - by Silvia Bombardini
Dear Shaded Viewers and Diane,
Last night in the heart of East London, as the unfamiliar sunshine we're getting these days slowly began to wane, we were sipping passion fruit cider and waiting patiently by the doors of Protein gallery for the promised Dazed Trash Fashion Forum to begin. To celebrate Dazed & Confused July issue a conference was called, where new womenswear graduates spoke side by side with major fashion figures the likes of Hussein Chalayan and Central Saint Martins Professor Caroline Evans. The theme was, naturally, trash - discussed intimately in all its nostalgic, romantic, extraordinary value, its garish uniqueness and its maudlin and inspiring heritage. The Met's PUNK exhibition came up, of course, and we were taught to appreciate the creative potential of simply not being able to afford everything. The ever briefer lifecycle of fashion was questioned, and so were the issues of a disposable culture, how to retrain our brains against seasons and how the real problem might be that fast fashion, well just isn't horrible enough.
Here is Hussein Chalayan's personal insight on the theme, as he explains how trash relates to his own work through the years in many diverse, fascinating ways.
