Stuffed Animals Galore - Jens Haas - commentary on juries
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Having been on many juries and definitely not always in agreement with the final results...I thought I'd direct you to Notes from Nowhere by Jens Haas,
"It’s that time of the year again - photo panels are making their decisions. Some insightful judges I talked to describe a strange phenomenon - more often than not, about one week or so after the vote, they scratch their heads and wonder what they were thinking. Dynamics within photo panels often seem to take very unexpected turns even for those who have a lot of experience in this game, and the end result even from a gifted panel often is boringly “trendy”. This year the trend obviously is about animals, living, dead, or stuffed; next year the current indulgence in hi tech fatigue may be taken a step further, and artists will dismantle their iPhones, eat them, and display the results “elaborately” and “quite humorously” [sic] with “references to surrealism”. Or something like that. One way or the other, there always seems to be a lot of group think involved, both amongst artists and judges. And, naturally, as if being on a panel is like being an actor in a Hollywood movie, afterwards everybody congratulates each other and expresses, at least in public, how “happy everybody is” with the decision."

"Nasty: My Family and Other Glamorous Varmints"
Dear Shaded Viewers,

Eccentric Glamour by Simon Doonan
For all of you that have been waiting for a new series to top Absolutely Fabulous, the time has come. I was just speaking with the mulit disciplinary Simon Doonan about the story of his life becoming a tv series.
"Hello!
I am delirious about the whole project. To have the producer of Abfab concocting a comedy series based on my life -
it's every fashion freak's dream.
love
SD"
I wanted to know if Simon would have anything to do with the series that will be aired on BBC2.
"I am deliriously and deliciously uninvolved.
Not sure when it's airing. They are casting now.
Can't wait to see who plays me. Have not lived in the Uk since the 70's so I
have no idea who should play me. Am leaving it all up to Jon Plowman and Jonathan Harvey."
Personally, I cannot wait till it comes out on DVD.

the Way of Tea - Urasenke
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Today when I was speaking with Junsuke Yamasaki

Junsuke Yamasaki
Editor - Dazed & Confused Japan , Dazeddigital.com
about N. Hoolywood in Tokyo we got onto the subject of tea and he introduced me to Urasenke the most famous and traditional Japanese tea ceremony group where his father works . I went to visit their website and found this lovely text:
SEN Rikyu, the 16th-century tea master who perfected the Way of Tea, was once asked to explain what this Way entails. He replied that it was a matter of observing but seven rules: Make a satisfying bowl of tea; Lay the charcoal so that the water boils efficiently; Provide a sense of warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer; Arrange the flowers as though they were in the field; Be ready ahead of time; Be prepared in case it should rain; Act with utmost consideration toward your guests.
According to the well-known story relating the dialogue between Rikyu and the questioner mentioned above, the questioner was vexed by Rikyu's reply, saying that those were simple matters that anyone could handle. To this, Rikyu responded that he would become a disciple of the person who could carry them out without fail.
This story tells us that the Way of Tea is basically concerned with activities that are a part of everyday life, yet to master these requires great cultivation. In this sense, the Way of Tea is well described as the Art of Living.
As seen within Rikyu's seven rules, the Way of Tea concerns the creation of the proper setting for that moment of enjoyment of a perfect bowl of tea. Everything that goes into that serving of tea, even the quality of the air and the space where it is served, becomes a part of its flavor. The perfect tea must therefore capture the 'flavor' of the moment -- the spirit of the season, of the occasion, of the time and the place. The event called chaji -- that is, a full tea gathering -- is where this takes place, and where the Way of Tea unfolds as an exquisite, singular moment in time shared by the participants.
The principles underlying this Art of Living are Harmony, Respect, Purity, and Tranquility. These are universal principles that, in a world such as ours today, fraught with unrest, friction, self-centeredness, and other such social ailments, can guide us toward the realization of genuine peace.

Shame on You
Dear Shaded Viewers,
This season we finally see the return of Black and Asian models on the runway, bravo, but what do you think of a new magazine that is about to launch with a title that sounds like an open sore who dictates that no black models are to be booked for their jazz story. And what is the history of jazz....shame on you. May the editor in chief burn in hell.

Post on the 'Fashion against AIDS' Video Wall on www.hm.com
Dear Shaded Viewers,
'Protect yourself and the people you love- use a condom'- this is the quote that's at the center of the 'Fashion against AIDS' campaign (our coop with H&M) that is now running globally and to which you can contribute, without having to move 1 inch from your computer: go to www.hm.com, click on 'Inspiration', then on 'Fashion against AIDS' and follow the instructions for recording your own version of the quote, so you can say it out loud & proud together with Timbaland, Rufus Wainwright, Tiga, Rihanna, Chicks on Speed, Nina Persson, Ziggy Marley, Good Charlotte, Katharine Hamnett and a host of other wellknown and anonymous people, who want to show their concern this way.
We're taking a screenshot of the Video Wall next week for a two page ad in the next issue of the V&A Magazine (published on 30.000 copies by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London), so if you'd like to be part of that, start cleaning that webcam now and record & post your quote!
Thank you and a happy weekend,
Ninette, Javier & Andrés
PS Please forward/post this message, as we'd like the FAA Video Wall to grow as much as possible!

Year of the rat
Rat people are born under the sign of charm and aggressiveness. They are expressive and can be talkative sometimes. They like to go to parties and spend quiet times chatting with their friends. Although the Rat can be quiet sometimes, it is rare to catch a Rat sitting quietly.
Rat people usually have more acquaintances than real friends and they revere and cherish those close to them. Once you become their real friends, they will treat you as their family. Rats are self-contained and keep problems to themselves. And even though they can be talkative sometimes, they never confide in anyone.
Sometimes mean, narrow-minded and suburban in outlook, Rat people are nevertheless honest. They can always make a success of their lives as long as they manage to master their perpetual discontent and their insistence on living for the present moment.
The Rat is quick-witted. Most rats get more accomplished in 24 hours than the rest of us do in as many days. They are confident and usually have good instinct. Stubborn as they are, they prefer to live by their own rules rather others. It won't be an easy task to work with Rat people, why? Simple, because they are also 100% perfectionists.
They are very organized and talented, perhaps that is why the Rat makes a good businessman or politician. Unfortunately, as soon as the Rat earns money, he spends it. Maybe that explains why the Rat is so careful when he lends money to others. If you ever borrow money from the Rat, don't be surprised by the high-interests.
The Rat is not romantic, but he is sensual and loving. Rat people could be hard to see through at first glance, because they are also very protective, but even though they are not easy but they are worth it - ask anyone who has a Rat for a lover, parent, child or friend. They are very loyal and devoting to their families.
The Chinese astrological cycle begins with the year of the Rat; consequently those born within this category like to be first, pioneers, at the forefront of the action. Because of this, they tend to see themselves as a cut above the others. Restless and inquisitive, those born under the influence of the Rat are active, both physically and mentally, and tend to lead busy lives. Challenge is essential to them for they love the thrill of living dangerously. With clairvoyance, intuition, perspicacity and an eye for detail, Rats are formidable problem solvers, finding workable solutions to the knottiest problems. Travelling is one of their favorite pastimes.
The Rat possesses attributes ranging from charming and humorous to honest and meticulous. The Chinese say those born in these years make good and wise advisors, yet they can never decide for themselves and change direction constantly. However, Rats at times hunger for power and money, leading some to be gamblers and others to be manipulative or petty. Their greed can lead them into a destructive trap.
Rats are best known for their charm. Blessed with a sharp wit, they possess a marvelous sense of humor, which makes them stimulating and amusing company to have around. Generally extroverted, they may well be described as opportunists for they prefer to live off their wits rather than labor long and hard to earn their daily bread.
Rats should have a happy childhood and a carefree youth. However, the second part of their lives may be stormy and problematical. They may be prone to lose money in a bad business deal or their happiness in an unfortunate love affair. The third part of their lives will be comfortable, and their old age as peaceful as could be wished.
It is important to note whether the Rat was born in the summer or the winter of the year. In summer the lofts and granaries are full, but in winter the Rat will be obliged to go out and forage for food, and must watch out for the traps set along the way. In human terms, this could mean the risk of prison or an accidental death.
The Passionate Rat
Rats are able to control their feelings and will generally present a cool facade to the outside world, regardless of whatever volcanic emotions they may be feeling inside. But these are passionate creatures whose feelings can be deeply stirred and though able to control them as a rule, when the volcano does erupt, watch out! Perhaps one of their faults is their inability to actually talk about their feelings to those they love, and consequently they tend to repress them -- thus adding to the volcanic pressure. As well as being deeply passionate they are sensual creatures who simply exude sexuality and who greatly enjoy all forms of physical stimulation.
Rats' romantic life is very quiet, provided that they take care not to interact with the Horse or Rooster. In particular, it is catastrophic for a male Rat to marry a female Fire Horse. They should be wary of those born in the Year of the Rabbit. Rats have excellent relations with the Dragon, Monkey, Ox and Tiger.
January is the month of the Rat. The time of the Rat is from 11:00 p.m. to 12:59 a.m.; their direction of orientation is the north. The Rat's color is light blue.

Astrology and Beyond-Pluto moves in with Capicorn
Dear Shaded Viewers,
And for everyone:
This week Pluto, the planet of rebirth, power, money and revolution will, for the first time since 1762 move in with the pragmatic, fair and ambitious sign of Capricorn. Astrological legend goes that 236 years ago, this powerful Astrological transit created the perfect Cosmic landscape for the American Revolution, based on the concept of freedom and equality for all!
Hopefully, we have evolved and will come to realize the truth in Gandhi's words: "The only devils in the world are those running in our own hearts. That is where the battle should be fought."
If you are a libra:
CosmicNews: This new transit will start a renovation project on your lifestyle and attitude, designed to help you gain your independence and distance yourself from people, circumstances or attitudes that no longer fit into your evolving definition of happiness. With thoughtful consideration and time, relationships that you don't want to leave behind (like family or old friends) can be transformed into new and even more vital and loving bonds.
This is a wonderful Pluto transit, and Helen Keller sums it up with these powerful words: "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength un-defeatable."

Dear SHaded Viewers,
One of my favorite astrology sites, www.astrologyandbeyond.com, offers some words of wisdom.
This week, consider the words of:
Barbara Hall: "Because you are in control of your life. Don't ever forget that you are what you are because of the conscious and subconscious choices you have made."
Marcus Aurelius: "If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment."
Friedrich Nietzsche's words: "The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."
Quotations were taken from www.astrologyandbeyond.com.

Kidnapped children in Sciley
Dear Shaded Viewers,
This is the plight of a friend of my sister's so if you are in a position to help, please do.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On 19 November 2007, Emanuele and Nicolas Amore were kidnapped by their father, Carmelo Amore, from Ispica, Sicily, after a ruling was issued by the Juvenile Court of Catania ordering that he surrender his sons to their mother, Karyn Krause, who lives in Albany, California.
Mr. Amore had illegally detained the children in Sicily after a summer vacation. Ms. Krause had to file a legal action for their return under the Hague Convention. The hearing took place in Catania on 7 November 2007 and the court issued a ruling for the immediate return of the children to California on 16 November 2007. However, before the appointment with Social Services in Ragusa, Sicily, Mr. Amore fled with the children.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can read more about this on the web site that Karyn set up: http://www.dovesonoifigliamore.org/
If you or someone you know can help in ANY way - particularly if you know anyone in the Italian or European media (or know someone who might know someone...), please contact Karyn directly at FindAmoreBoys@gmail.com. At this point, publicizing the kidnapping in Europe will be a big help.

DINO DINCO : FROM THE DENTAL CHAIR TO TOM FORD'S MOIST CHEST
This morning, I went in for a routine cleaning at the dentist. As I sat in the waiting area, I picked up one of the magazines on the Pier One endtable. "Details." Should be called "Entrails," if you ask me. I thought about the days when Details was a magazine that was engaging and colorful to both read and look at. Intelligent and / or fun reportage. Imaginative fashion. And as a 17 year older (9 years ago....you know), unable to get into nightclubs, I could peer into a noctural club world and burn with envy. But now Details offers modern men cover stories like "400 ways to wear a brown corduroy vest with navy slacks!"
I started thinking about actually being at the dentist. I've never been phobic of dental appointments, like many, and in fact, I embrace that superclean feeling when you leave the office. Hmm, now where can I get a cup of enamal-staining coffee and cavity-breeding tarte tartin?
As I was flipping through "Entrails" from back to front (one paralyzing fashion spread after the next), I imagined being in the dental chair and how it's like flying business class with a shop light in your face for the whole flight. With your shirt protected by a paper apron upon which dancing bunnies or ducks with umbrellas are printed, the dentist and her assistant cram all of their fingers into your open mouth at the same time.
They pare, prod, scrap and dislodge all the funky compost you've been unable to remove with your inferior, pedestrian toothbrush. Fortunately, they DON'T say things like, "So how was the spinach salad you ate a few days ago? Extra cranberries? Nice touch." I considered the awkward suction tube that invariably makes tongue placement a big and ongoing deal -- until it attaches itself to your uvula, forcing the dentist to stop the cleaning and allow your legs to cease flinching.
I thought, "What's more absurd than this procedure we go through in order to not be a big, gross mush mouth?"
Then I turned the page and saw this ad.
Click image for the full experience.
Oh, hey, Tom....
What the hell?
Can anyone make sense of this? I mean first the Vanity Fair cover story where TF (whose hairy chest would make any member of www.bear411.com proud) is engaged in this orgy-lite with two ghostly milk maidens whose names escape me (for lack of interest) and now this...
I don't know about you, but when my chest gets sweaty (say, when a tranny shoves her hand into my own ruffled tuxedo poet's blouse, for example)...my face -- and the rest of me -- is also quite sweaty. The face of TF, however, is as moist-free as a freshly picked leaf of Papier Poudre. And no, the hot spot on his forehead doesn't count.
Can anyone hook me up with the casting session tape for the arm model....

http://www.iwantobeapilot.com/
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Omondi is the name of the character in the film played by Collins. Omondi is an HIV child that recites a poem that tells us his dream. Unfortunately the free upload of the film is no longer available. You can, however, purchase the film or visit the site and hear the poem. Diego Quemada-Diez, the director, wrote the poem that Omondi recites.
http://www.iwantobeapilot.com/
Venya, A Shaded Viewer, sent me this link. He had read the piece posted a few days ago on the Gap and the child sweatshop. Another Shaded Viewer, Jesus Sandoval sent me the article from the Observer 28-10-07, both I choose to share with you.
A statement from the Director:
"After the amazing experience of working in the film The Constant Gardener I wanted to make my own film in Kibera. My intention was to find a powerful story that would show the extreme situation in the slums of Nairobi.
So I went back to listen to the kids from the ghetto, to hear their stories, their feelings, their dreams.
On August 2005 I interviewed about 50 orphan kids in one of the classrooms from Raila’s School.
David Mugambe and the school’s principal helped me organize the interviews. David passed away just a few weeks later in a car accident. Wherever he is now, I thank him deeply from my heart. The film would not be what it is whithout his help. This film is dedicated to him as well as all the victims of AIDS, poverty and social injustice around the world.
Most of the kids I listened to had lost both parents at a very young age, and all of them from AIDS. The parents were all in their twenties at the time of death.
The kids told me about their feelings of loneliness, their sorrows, their complaints about corruption, pollution, the lack of clean water and sanitization, religious fanatism, the exploitation by adults, and most importantly, the lack of love in their lives, the absence of hope for a better future.
I will never forget how an eight year old kid explained to me how he used decantation to get clean water from black, extremely infected, polluted water. It took him hours, just pouring from one glass to another, waiting for the solids to settle, over and over, so at the end he would boil it and drink it.
All the kids cried for help, one after the other.
They asked me for school uniforms, for books, for food, for water, for money to pay the school’s tuition, for pencils/pens and many other things.
I was overwhelmed, I just listened as deeply as I could.
When asked about their dreams and hopes most of them wanted to be airline pilots, doctors or nurses.
After a few hours, I left home very moved.
Suddenly, it was as if something hit me:
80% of them wanted to be airline pilots!
I thought: “I Want to Be A Pilot”.
Then I started writing.
I started crying.
Writing, crying. I could not stop either one.
Somehow the words were pouring out of me.
After two days the poem was completed.
Then I went back to Kibera with the sound crew to record the kids reading the poem. After eight kids read the poem, there was one that had a powerful sadness in his voice. It was as if he carried everyone’s sorrow.
I had found him. It was Collins, who in the film plays Omondi.
A year later I went back with a Super-8 camera and shot the images for the film.
That’s a little bit of the story of how this came into being, I really din’t know where it was heading.. I just wanted to listen to them and create something that would inspire us to want to take action.
There are millions of kids in the world victims of the injustices of our industrial civilization, while we are distracted buying things, evading reality.
Our neocolonial policies are taking their toll on our children, on mother earth and all living beings we share this planet with.
Their suffering is ours.
Wake up!"

If you receive any solicitation from dpernet@gmail.com or diane@free.fr (or any other email addresses) asking for money to be sent, please do NOT reply and do NOT send any money. These fraudsters continue to mutate into more sophisticated forms so don't be fooled. Diane is fine, in Paris, and has NEVER been to Nigeria and does not need any assistance. Diane can be contacted by posting on her blog, www.ashadeviewonfashion.com, and her whereabouts always known through the blog as well. Diane appreciates all your concern but reassures you she is doing very well apart from this nasty muddle.
I have given all information over to Internet Crime Complaint Center. I suggest if you have had your e mail account compromised you do the same.
Later,
Diane
I apologize to all shaded viewers for these constant posts but until it comes to an end I feel the need to alert you of this fraud.

astrologyandbeyond.com
Dear Shaded Viewers,
I don't know if it was the inspired visit with Christine Yufon yesterday or just that the words ring so true, but I wanted to pass these words of wisdom off to you.
This was for libras this week but I think it is good for everyone, if you have not visited the site astrologyandbeyond.com you will probably want to stop by.
In September, as you contemplate where you have been and where you are going, remind yourself of this sage adage: "No one can go back and make a brand-new start, my friend, but anyone can start from here and make a brand-new end."

Feeding Eagles -A small report from the East from House of Waris
Dear Shaded Viewers,
I received this lovely mail from Waris, the man behind the most beautiful and very spiritual, luxury brand, House of Waris. I am still dreaming of his platnium diamond infinity ring. I asked Waris if I could share the poetry of his day with you and he told me that I could.
Dear Diane,
My tailor came by this morning to drop off a suit. So of course I ordered some tea and we sat on my veranda just chit chatting. He's practically my only friend in town. No, I don't think I'm buying his friendship.
Well at one point he says "I feel like feeding the eagles. Do you want to come along?" Now how am I going to say no to that.
We hop in the car and our little adventure begins. First stop, the butcher where we pick up a few pounds of meat. Then we head to the eagles. In a small clearing behind some historic building in the old city stand two massive trees. On each branch rests a beautiful eagle. Before I know it, my friend is hurling chunks of raw meat into the air. The eagles swoop in and pluck their lunch from the sky. After some minutes of this, a few other men with similar bags come onto the scene. One shouts as he throws the meat towards the heavens, " Cheel! Cheel! Cheel! " eagle, eagle, eagle.
One guy has no real control of where his bit of meat goes so there are birds criss crossing all over the place.
When an eagle misses, there are plenty of low flying crows to catch the delectable delights. Some even just hang out on the ground to claim the leftovers.
Why feed the eagles I ask ? He says its "good luck". I fed a few crows as well. I wonder what that will bring me.
Faithfully yours,
Waris

My friend Graham Tabor is in Shanghai at the moment and just informed me that ASVONF is amongst the sites it deems too dangerous for the general Chinese public and blocks...me and wikipedia. The page loads with the illustration by Miguel Villalobos and then tells you the page does not exist when you try to access the actual site.

Tina Isaac, Francois Goize and Jules
Dear Shaded Viewers,
It's not like me to post baby photos on my site but I can not resist. I worked with Tina Isaac at both Elle.com and Vogueparis.com and I am so happy for her and Francois Goize that I just could not help myself. I have a half a dozen more but I will only show you this one. They are all beautiful. Then again, Jules' Dad is a photographer.
Congratulations to the three of them.
