Kenny Scharf's Cosmic Cavern-a-Go-Go party, November 27 in NYC. Photos by Glenn Belverio
Dear Shaded Viewers,
As far as I can tell, New Yorkers didn't celebrate Black Friday by going shopping; they (the cool ones, at least) celebrated by going to a black light party at Kenny's automatically-legendary-by-definition loft in Williamsburg. Of course we all felt like we were back in the '80s, especially when we spotted Cynthia Social Lies--whom I knew from the early days of TUNNEL--working the door.
No, that's not John Galliano....it's Kenny Scharf!
Roger Padilha from MAO PR tries to shake Kenny down for his Alice B. Toklas brownies recipe.

Nothing Up My Sleeve curated by Jonathan Berger & featuring Vaginal Davis. Photos by Glenn Belverio
Above: Vaginal Davis in Rick Owens
Dear Shaded Viewers,
My friend, the self-described "retarded whore," Vaginal Davis is in town. There was no presidential-style motorcade to escort her to the group show which she has work in--at Participant Gallery--but luckily I was available to walk her to the gallery and help her shimmy into her black velvet Rick Owens gown. I was also supposed to be lifting her train as she sauntered around the gallery but got distracted and ended up stepping all over it instead.
The show, NOTHING UP MY SLEEVE also includes work by Nancy Barton and Michael Glass with Allison Somers and Eric Van Speights, James Lee Byars, Carol Bove, Andy Kaufman and more. The show is up until December 20th so swing by Participant at 253 Houston Street in NYC if you're in the 'hood (which happens to be MY hood, don't you know).
A character that late performance artist Andy Kaufman created was the lewd lounge singer Tony Clifton. The show features the premiere of his new fragrance, CLIFTON by Tony Clifton. A few weeks ago I saw Mr. Clifton deliver his outrageously filthy stand-up act at Participant which featured such unmentionable jokes as, "What's the difference between my girlfriend and a dead baby? I don't kiss my girlfriend on the lips after sex." If you want more, more, more! of this, then don't miss Tony Clifton's big show at Santos Party House this coming Monday night. It will feature his 17-piece Katrina Kiss My Ass Orchestra.
After Tony Clifton's show a few weeks ago at Participant, a film was screened which seemed to show someone digging up Andy Kaufman's grave in Elmont, New Jersey and opening his coffin to expose his skeleton. I mistook this piece (by Eric Van Speights) in the NOTHING UP MY SLEEVE show as an homage to the Kaufman film, but I was (gravely?) mistaken. But here is the film, anyway. (The version we saw at the gallery had REM's "Man in the Moon" as the soundtrack, much nicer than the one in the YouTube version):
Vaginal has a corner of the gallery where various photos and ephemera from her long career are displayed. The above photo, of Vag with her band the Afro Sisters, is from a 1986 issue of INTERVIEW magazine--in fact, it was the last issue of INTERVIEW that Andy Warhol had worked on. Reminds me of the time I met the waiter who claims to be the last person who served Andy in a restaurant.
Vagina's band Cholita. Her other Mexican-American punk band, Pedro, Muriel and Esther will be performing "Advanced Capitalism Reunion: Reparations and Retardations" at Santos Party House this Monday night. Trust me, you won't want to miss this one.
A photo from the making of the ironically named video "One Man Ladies" which co-starred and was co-directed by Ms. Davis and Glennda Orgasm.
Ms. Davis and Justin Bond. Things got a little wild when Vag began describing Justin's "spicy beef curtains" in vivid detail.
Harry Houdini, the legendary magician, also had some work in the show. Above is one of his curious drawings.
Everyone should have a set of gold lame Chinese pajamas, oui?
Thanks for reading.

The Martus Maw presented by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld at Essex Meat Market in New York. Photos by Glenn Belverio
Above: The ridiculously handsome Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld. His body just hangs off those cheekbones.
Dear Shaded Viewers,
Nadine Johnson was kind enough to invite me to the opening of The Martus Maw, new paintings by Nicolas Pol presented by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld. The champagne-soaked soiree took place Monday night at the old Essex Street Meat Market. The fashion people outnumbered the art-world people so instead of pseudo-academic smugness, the sweet stench of Tom Ford's White Musk and clinical narcissism hung in the air.
Perfectly coiffed heads turned when French Vogue Editor-in-Chief and Vladimir's mom, Carine Roitfeld (right) made an entrance with her date, Jean Paul Gaultier.
Nicolas Pol (above) is a 32-year-old painter who lives and works in Paris. He began exhibiting his work eight years ago. "Yes, I want to sell my paintings," he says. "I've been through the experience of the painter who needs to keep his paintings. Watching them rot on the spot. Dying of hunger."
Another solution could be to just eat cats like the reclusive painter in Dario Argento's "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage."
Would Pol ever consider making a film, ala Julian Schnabel? "I did try filming, but I couldn't do it," he admits. "There are filmmakers who paint with their camera. I stayed in 'getting-my-hands-dirty' mode. I would need a camera that dribbles or vomits."
So what was the verdict from many of the attendees regarding the vomit, I mean paintings? Basquiat meets Pollock with a small slab of Bacon but maybe with prettier colors.
I liked the decrepit ceiling of the space; I thought it complemented the paintings nicely.
Thanks for reading.

OPENS TODAY - When I Grow Up at Galerie Jeanroch Dard
This October, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin celebrates its 20th anniversary and Galerie Jeanroch Dard its first. Acting in mutual affinity, the two spaces have decided to celebrate these dates through a group exhibition at Galerie Jeanroch Dard.
Starting with the premise that comtemporary art regards itself as a dialogue, the idea of an exhibit /encounter between two generations of artists was born - installing a dialogue between the artists of both galeries through their works, and thus producing original partnerships.
Each of the artists of Galerie Jeanroch Dard will create a piece in resonance with a pre-existing piece of their Perrotin partner. It is up to each of the young artists to capture the artistic experience and the message behind the works of their more established peers. The idea is not to plagiarise, but to echo...

The Paperball at the Museum of Art & Design in New York. By Glenn Belverio
Dear Shaded Viewers,
The Paperball at MAD in Columbus Circle was like Old Home Week for the NY fashion set. So many people I hadn't seen in ages--Yoehlee, ThreeAsFour, Horacio Silva, Cator Sparks, Huilian Ma, Jillian Smith, the Door Bitch--came out for an evening of celebrating art and fashion pieces made of paper. This gala fundraiser for the museum featured a silent auction (I heard that all of the designers ended up selling their pieces for the benefit) and a VIP dinner hosted by Rose McGowan and Bryan Batt from "Mad Men" (being press, I wasn't invited to the dinner so instead hung out in the kitchen and hoovered up some green tea cupcakes, washed down with some Hendrick's gin with cucumbers.)
Paper dress by Yoehlee
Steve Sang of Seven New York (right) and friend
Artist Slava Mogutin & me
Illustrator Robert W. Richards and friend. I love Robert's work and his comments in the Peter Berlin documentary "That Man."
Brian Kenny & Slava
Slava's piece in the show
Cator Sparks and Edina Sultanik
It's just not a party unless ThreeAsFour are there.
Paper Covers Rock won the award for the laziest yet funniest piece in the show.

Seven New York's Six Scents Series 2 party at Stephen Weiss Studio in New York. By Glenn Belverio
Dear Shaded Viewers,
It was a sniff-tastic evening at Weiss Studios--the space Donna Karan had built for her late husband Stephen--last night when Seven New York launched their second series of scents. This round features fragrances by designers 3.1 Phillip Lim, Damir Doma, Henrik Vibskov, House of Holland, Richard Nicoll and Toga.
The host of the evening was designer Henry Holland (above, right). The House of Holland scent, Flashback:Smell, was created by Henry and Stephen Nilsen. "Similar to the varying effects a perfume can have on any particular person. Flashback:Smell explores the way an individual might remember thoughts and feelings associated with the experience of the fragrance."
Photographer Matthew Brookes (right) with his boyfriend. It was a big surprise to run into Matthew as I hadn't seen him since 2003 when I was working as a guest editor for WestEast magazine. I met Matthew in Shanghai when our editor, Kevin Lee, sent us on an assignment to do a story on Shaolin Temple and Kung Fu in Henan province.
