Last week in New York: Andy Warhol's Double Marlon party, Ron Galella's Warhol book party, and Albert Maysles Scrapbook launch at John Bartlett. By Glenn Belverio

Dear Shaded Viewers,

It was quite a week in New York with a plethora of openings, rivers of champagne (and shrimp!), and a parade of legends mixing with the pretty kiddies. As Halston was wont to say, "Oh sweeticakes, I'm just pooped!" First up was the Christie's party for Warhol's Double Marlon in the penthouse suite of the Soho Grand Hotel hosted by People's Revolution.

Next night I was off to the Ron Galella opening at Staley-Wise gallery...

Rachel Marie Walsh reports in from London on the Ponystep launch

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Richard_mortimerGareth_and_henry Ponystep Founder Richard Mortimer and Gareth Pugh and Henry Holland

After closing legendary London hotspot Boombox on New Year’s Eve, at the height of the club’s popularity, Richard Mortimer decided to turn his talent to the web. Ponystep, his much anticipated fashion e-zine, was launched with a fabulous party on Sunday night, before going live on the worldwide web at 12pm Monday. Thanks to the success of his nightclubs- Golf Sale, Family and the fash-pack palace that was Boombox, Mortimer is one of the best connected men in the business and his friends were out in force to celebrate his latest venture. The crowd included designers Gareth Pugh, Bella Freud, Roland Mouret, Giles Deacon and Henry Holland as well as Editor-in-Chief of POP Magazine, Katie Grand and a gorgeous mix of models, fashion editors, photographers and poseurs. The party was held at Sketch, a luxurious art gallery-cum-nightclub in Mayfair. Guests sipped Absolut pears vodka cocktails with Schweppes Lemonade and alternated between gazing at everyone’s MAC-ed up faces and admiring the weird and wonderful installations that littered their surroundings.

Roland_mouret_2Henderson_mccuegary_cardkatie_shill

Needless to say, the clothes made the whole scene phantasmagoric. Lord of the guest list Cathal O’ Brian caught my eye first, looked suitably aristocratic in a voluminous, geometric Gareth Pugh coat. Pugh himself look Slimane-skinny in a leather waistcoat with tails, leather trousers and high heeled, pointed boots. Dazed and Confused’s Katie Shillingford wins most fashion-forward footwear for her painted Pradas and designer Pam Hogg was resplendent in multicoloured furs. It was the real club kids, though, that proved the Boombox spirit is still going strong. The fashion magic that exploded from Alistair Allan’s party shots on dirtydirtydancing.com, instead of dissipating, simply went skipping and jumping out across London after the club closed its doors.

Who better to refocus that energy on a hot new project than Richard Mortimer? The ex-hairdresser, who charged no door fee at Boombox, has found friends in high places since Golf Sale opened in 2003. “I fell in with a really exciting group of people when I first got here [to London]. I knew very little about anything, and to have people introduce me to new ideas was fantastic!” he says. Designers that contribute to Ponystep include Bella Freud, Christian Louboutin, Giles Deacon and Stephen Jones. There’s photography by Johnnie Shand Kidd and fabulous feature writing by Sunday Times ‘Wardrobe Mistress’ Claudia Croft. It’s a proper fashion glossy, sans bland editorial and excessive advertising. Saddle up at www.ponystep.com.

Friday night in New York: The Squeezebox movie premiere party. By Glenn Belverio

Deborah_harry_and_michael
Above: Deborah Harry and Michael Schmidt

Dear Shaded Viewers,

On Friday night I attended the premiere of the long-awaited SQUEEZEBOX! movie and the after-party at the Gramercy Theater. It was like a high school reunion, so many friends I haven't seen in ages, freaks I used to get drunk with every Friday night at Don Hill's, back in the '90s. Marc Jacobs kindly sponsored the party and there were stellar performances from Debbie Harry, Misstress Formika, Jayne County, Miss Guy and the Toilet Boys, the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black and more. It was a night that will not be equaled for a long time to come.

For more photos from the party and my review of the film, please visit Confessions from the Velvet Ropes.

Last night in New York: Dita Von Teese makes a splash at the Angel Orensanz Foundation. By Glenn Belverio

Dear Shaded Viewers,

New York hasn't really become as boring as everyone says it is. Exhibit A: The Dita Von Teese Cointreau party last night on the Lower East Side. Okay, so maybe it felt more like an LA party but at least there's more going on here than just long lines at Whole Foods and toxic work-a-holism. In the house: Roxanne Lowit, Russel Simmons, Steven Klein, that guy who played Samantha's bf on SATC, Catherine Malandrino, Richie Rich, Michael Schmidt and about 400 drunken Cointreau employees.

More photos from my party for Diane Pernet, March 28, 2008. By Glenn Belverio

Dear Shaded Viewers,

My kitchen still looks like someone blew up a liquor store with an atomic bomb and I'm feeling a bit woozy....but here are some shots from last night. I thought it was pretty legendary. It reminded me of being back at Jackie 60 or Danceteria or Save the Robots and I was so proud to have so many brilliant, creative people in my apartment all at the same time. The East Village may be full of bland yuppies and lackluster NYU students now but that doesn't mean I can't keep the bohemian tradition going on my own terms under my own roof.

When Laine walked in I really felt like I was back at The Pyramid Club or Danceteria circa 1985 (back when I was just a fetus in a jar, carried around New York by Andy Warhol). She wore cardboard-cutouts of Sophia Loren's hands from a famous Ron Galella photo. Brilliant.

Genet's old stomping ground and "the Guantanamo of bars": Nights out during 080 Barcelona Fashion by Glenn Belverio

Sara_montiel
Above: Sara Montiel wants to know, "Where have all the trannies gone?"

When we piled out of the taxi at Sant Pau, on the "wrong side" of the tourist-tainted Las Ramblas, the driver issued a baleful warning: "Don't go there, it's dangerous!"

"He's just a pro-Franco leftover, don't listen to him," I told Anh Tuan, Lilly, and Klara. "He doesn't want us to know that there are immigrants in Barcelona." Rough-around-the-edges Raval, a neighborhood where many Pakastanis, North Africans, Indians, and Ecuadorans live and run businesses, is one of the most ethnically diverse places in Europe. It is also the notorious area where a young Jean Genet worked as a male prostitute in the 1920's. It was obviously the place to  be. At the advice of Bruce LaBruce's curator friend, Alex Brahim, we were making our way over to a bar called Marsella, opened in 1820 by a native of Marseilles. Picasso, Gaudi, and Genet all reportedly drank absinthe here back in the day....waaaaay before my "back in the day" of the early '90s. It was only about 11pm and we were the first ones there, but within minutes the place filled up with Catalan hipsters and Moroccan thrill-seekers.

Marsella Marsella_2
Above: The bar's 100+ year old booze bottles are covered with a layer of dust thicker than the one that blankets my NY East Village aerie.

Tequila and lemonade

Because a day without Genet is like a day without sunshine.

La_concha_entrance
Spanish actress/icon Sara Montiel beckons visitors to La Concha. The area's Hindu influence seems to have given her an extra set of mystical eyes.

Next stop was La Concha, a hookah bar run by cute gay guys that pays homage to Sara Montiel on its walls and plays salsa music for a crowd of gays, straights, Catalans and Raval's melting pot. There was even a guido from Atlantic City there! When we walked into the bar, a broken glass flew through the air and a few stools toppled over as the owners chased some rabble-rouser out the door and down the street with an iron pipe. I turned to our group and said, "See? I told you this was the right place to come to!"

La_concha_walls Hookah_1
Anh Tuan from Hintmag and Klara (who I think is a dead ringer for Cate Blanchett in "Notes on a Scandal") from systeme D get groovy with a hookah at La Concha. Klara must be high on life, because the apple tobacco didn't even contain nicotine nevermind anything stronger!

Sara Montiel does her thing in a scene from one of her films. It's interesting to note that the adorable Gael Garcia Bernal was imitating Montiel during his drag turn in Almodovar's terrific "Bad Education." Funny enough, La Concha used to host a drag cabaret but for reasons unknown to me, stopped doing them in late 2006. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Hopefully I will return to Barcelona in October and Alex can show me some of the tranny outposts. (Surely the streetwise, cocksucking queens of Almodovar's "All About My Mother" have found another stage to ply their other talents.)

Manchester_menu

On night 2, we ventured back to Raval in the hopes of visiting the amusingly-named Betty Ford bar. But it was packed with scenesters so instead we went across the street to what turned out to be a much better place: Manchester. I was definitely in my element here as I was weened on The Smiths, Joy Division, and New Order. It was the perfect dive bar to relax in after a day of fashion shows.

Godfrey_and_friend
No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs: The Johnny Rotten of fashion journalism, Irishman Godfrey Deeny of Fashion Wire Daily (left) and fashion designer Alberto Tous outside of Manchester.

We ran into Godfrey at Manchester who was drinking with his friend Louis from L'Officiel. Back in the early '00s, when I was covering the NY shows for DUTCH and Eluxury.com, I used to see Godfrey in the front row and think he was a cold snob. But after spending time with him in Barcelona, I've decided that Godfrey Deeny is my hero. As we were all throwing back mojitos and caipirnhas at Manchester, Godfrey turned (hurled?) the conversation toward French politics (he lives in Paris and 4 people in our group were French). He demanded to know who everyone had voted for in the last French election. The French became silent in that nonconfrontational way of theirs. "The French are all fucking lazy!!" Godfrey yelled loud enough so that people back in France could hear him. Finally, a few sheeplishly admitted that they had voted for Sarkozy (much to my horror, I must admit) and Godfrey actually congratulated them because he felt that Royal was not even a real candidate. Talk then turned to Katoucha's unfortunate last dip in the Seine and I said sardonically, "In America, whenever we hear about a woman falling off a buildng or into the river, we just assume that Claude Montana pushed them." Barbara, a cool French woman, replied mischievously, "You just believe whatever BOOSH tells you!" Touche, Barbara.

Lillie_afterparty_2
Lilly from the LA-based Preen Magazine gets down at the fashion week wrap-up party.

On night 3 we arrived at the closing night party about 10 minutes before it was over, after a long, leisurely and fantastic tapas dinner in the Barri Gotic. The party was co-sponsored by a human rights organization, so there was high fashion shown on mannequins juxtaposed with political agitprop posters:

Guantanamo Guantanamo_2 Bush_skull Bush_hitler

Okay. I am a liberal Democrat and an Oscar Wildean Socialist. Most of my friends would probably even say that I'm a full-blown commie. And I've frequently cited the political prisoners held by the US government at Guantanamo whenever people start wailing and whining about Fidel Castro's political prisoners. So I applaud any light shed on this issue. And while I find Bush as loathsome as the next intelligent person, I have to say that this poster of Bush-as-Hitler is silly and reductive, not to mention that it's been done so many times over the past 8 years. It's tired. And historically inaccurate. It just isn't intelligent. I do get annoyed by European anti-Americanism and the air of sanctimony that goes along with it. European governments are far from perfect, my dears, (where are the Tony Blair-as-Mussolini posters?) and why don't you paste up some posters criticizing Spain's involvement in the attempted coup against Hugo Chavez in 2002? Regardless of what you think of Mr. Chavez's government, he is a democratically elected leader. Don't get me started.

So I was wildly amused by Godfrey's reaction to this whole situation. When we arrived at the party, the bar had apparently stopped serving beer. It looked like they still had it, but just didn't feel like serving it anymore. Godfrey asked a for a beer a few times, only to be given the cold shoulder. Finally as we were leaving, Godfrey was standing on a ramp above the bar and looked down at the barkeeps like he was Moses on the mountain and pointed at them accusingly, "You want to preach about Guantanamo, do you? Well YOU'RE GUANTANAMO!! You're the GUANTANAMO OF BARS!!! You're LUCKY we even came to your FUCKING party!!" I wish I could have videotaped it.

Louis_and_godfrey_3
Back at La Concha, Godfrey calmed down with a nice cigar. Louis from L'Officiel appears to be doing some kind of French fashion gang member sign. Like, "Don't come on our turf with your illicit Vuitton bags or we'll cut you up with our Hermes pen knives, yo!"

Lillie_on_c2
Exhausted from all the fabulous Catalan fashions and nightlife, lovely Lilly from Preen Magazine takes 5 on Barcelona's "C"

The real story behind BOOMBOX as told to me by Richard Mortimer

Dear Shaded Viewers,
Netdsc_1458large
Photos by Alistair Allan http://www.dirtydirtydancing.com

As Richard Mortimer says, all good things must come to an end so on January 1st BOOMBOX shutters up.

Ndsc_3365
Richard Mortimer and friends

How did you get started and what were the times like when Boombox was
born, how have they changed since then?

Ndsc_2545

BOOMOX WAS STARTED ALMOST BY ACCIDENT. IT ACTUALLY GOES BACK OVER 4 YEARS.
MY FRIEND DANILO MILIC AND MYSELF WERE REALLY BORED OF GOING OUT AT THE
WEEKENDS IN SHOREDITCH. I WAS FRIENDS WITH THE OWNER OF THE HOXTON SQUARE
BAR AND KITCHEN AND APPROACHED HIM ABOUT HAVING THE VENUE ON SUNDAY NIGHTS.
HE WAS A LITLLE SCEPTICLE AT FIRST, BUT TOOK A CHANCE ON US ANYWAY. SUNDAY
NIGHTS BACK THEN WERE OFTEN THE QUIET NIGHT OF THE WEEK. THEN SOMETHING
HAPPENED. THE GEORGE AND DRAGON AND JONNY WOO BEGAN TO HOLD A WEEKLY PARTY
CALLED 'RADIO EGYPT'. IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS - A MIX OF UNASHAMED 80'S POP
MUSIC AND AMAZING DRAG PERFORMANCES FROM JONNY WOO. IT WAS AN INSTANT HIT
AND RAN FOR ABOUT A YEAR ON A WEEKLY BASIS, BUT THEN WAS SUDDENLY CUT SHORT.
WE WERE THEN THROWN BACK TO LOST SUNDAYS. IT WAS A FEW MONTHS AFTER THIS
THAT WE DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING OURSELVES.

Ndsc_0101

What is life like as a party promotor? Can you take me through your
different incarnations, how did you get started, etc. etc.

LIFE AS A CLUB PROMOTER IS OFTEN MUCH HARDER THAN PEOPLE THINK. BOOMBOX IN
PARTICULAR IS REALLY DIFFERENT TO OTHER CLUBS. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE IS THAT
IT IS A NON-PROFIT CLUB. I DON'T CHARGE ON THE DOOR, THEREFORE, I DON'T GET
PAID. THE VENUE PAY MY DJ AND STAFFING COSTS, BUT THATS IT. ANYTHING ELSE, I
PAY FOR MYSELF. IT’S QUITE FUNNY BECAUSE PEOPLE OFTEN THINK THAT I MUST BE
MAKING LOADS OF MONEY FROM THE CLUB. THE TRUTH IS, I HAVE TO WORK A DAY JOB
TO BE ABLE TO LIVE. IT IS OFTEN HARD JUGGLING THE TWO. IT MEANS THAT ON THE
DAYS I WORK, I AM UP REALLY EARLY TRYING TO GET THINGS DONE BEFORE WORK, AND
THEN IT’S BACK TO THE OFFICE AFTER WORK. SAYING THAT, ITS NOT ALL WORK WORK
WORK, THERE ARE LOTS OF PERKS TO THE JOB. LOTS OF TRAVELING AND PARTIES!!!

Ndsc_0111

How did Boombox mirror our times, what would you say the main
elements that made Boombox work?

I THINK THE FACT THAT WE TRY TO BRING LIKE MINDED PEOPLE TOGETHER IS WHAT
MAKES THE CLUB WORK. WE WILL NOT ALLOW CHAVS INTO THE CLUB FOR EXAMPLE. WE
DO HAVE QUITE A TOUGH DOOR POLICY, BUT I THINK IT IS NEEDED WHEN THE AREA
YOU ARE IN SUDDENLY BECOMES 'TRENDY'. I THINK THAT THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP
WITH LONDONS FASHION SCENE IS OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE.

Ndsc_0153

Were there any references from the past?

AS WITH ANYTHING, THERE ARE ALWAYS REFERENCES FROM THE PAST. OF COURSE I SAW
JEANETTE AS A 'TROJAN' TYPE. OF COURSE THERE ARE COMPARISONS TO STUDIO 54
AND TABOO. WHAT IS IMPORTANT THOUGH, IS THAT I NEVER SET OUT TO 'COPY' ANY
OTHER CLUB. IT HAS TO GROW ORGANICALLY. I WORK WITH A TEAM OF PEOPLE THAT I
REALLY LIKE TO BE AROUND. I DON'T EMPLOY PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY ARE 'COOL'. I
WORK WITH PEOPLE I LIKE AND RESPECT.

Ndsc_0311
Dsc_1337

How did Boombox effect fashion? How would you define the boombox style?

I THINK THAT BOOMBOX HAS REALLY REMINDED PEOPLE THAT ITS FUN TO DRESS UP. IT
HAS TO BE STRESSED THAT THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'DRESSING UP' AND
'FANCY DRESS'. THE BOOMBOX STYLE COULD BE ANYTHING. I ADMIRE PEOPLE THAT
HAVE GOOD TASTE. I ADMIRE PEOPLE WITH BAD TASTE. IF YOU WEAR YOUR LOOK WITH
CONFIDENCE, THEN IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE IN A COUTURE GILES GOWN OR
INFLATED BIN BAGS.

Ndsc_1525

MAC COSMETICS RECENTLY COLLABORATED ON MY BOOK PROJECT AND THEY SAW THE
IMPACT OF BOOMBOX INTERNATIONALLY. THE PR HAD, JUST DAYS BEFORE OUR FIRST
MEETING, BEEN IN NEWCASTLE AND WAS TAKING THE TRAIN BACK TO LONDON ON A
FRIDAY NIGHT WHEN A GROUP OF KIDS BOARDED THE TRAIN AND STARTED GOING ALL
OUT WITH THEIR MAKE-UP. THERE WERE SEVERAL BOYS IN THIS GROUP TOO. SHE
CREDITED BOOMBOX AS HAVING A MASSIVE INFLUENCE ON KIDS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

Ndsc_1902

Who notably hung out there?

Dsc_00671Dsc_0104

I DON'T REALLY WANT TO GET INTO NAME DROPPING. THERE ARE A FEW WHO 'NOTABLY'
DIDN'T GET IN THOUGH!!!

Dsc_5345

What were some of the most iconic moments?

MY FAVOURITE NIGHT HAVE TO BE:

GARETH PUGH AFTERSHOW PARTY WITH KYLIE MINOGUE
POP MAGAZINE CHRISTMAS PARTY
BOOMBOX 1ST BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH ROISIN MURPHY

Precisely who were involved in the stucture of Boombox?

WE HAD A BIG TEAM:

JERRY BOUTHIER -DJ
MATTHEW STONE - DJ
DJ ROKK - DJ
ANDREA GORGERINO - DJ
COZETTE MCCREERY - DOORHOST
NUNO ANTUNES - DOORHOST
SARON - CLOAKROOM
MANDI LENNARD - PR
ALISTAIR ALLAN - PHOTOGRAPHER
LAVINIA CO-OP - CLUB HOST
MIKKO - CLUB HOST
HELGA - CLUB HOST

What made you want to close the doors on January 1st and why?
ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END. I FEEL READY TO MOVE ON AND DO SOMETHING
NEW.
What comes next?

The Vedettes at Palais du Tokyo by Shoji Fujii

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Despite the strikes that paralyze the city, the Vedettes from Brussels gave a performance last night that kept everyone laughing and nearly rolling on the floor.

THE THIRD BODY
Le sexe de Burroughs par Bruce Benderson
Bruce_1

The Maison du Bois at the Vogue Ball in London

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Central Saint Martins' Levi Palmer and his Maison Du Bois.

Levi

He thinks his look is Mugler, I think it is more Boy George, at any rate it's very London in the 80's.

DINO DINCO : JOAO-LENE, JOAO-LENE, PLEASE DON'T TAKE MY MAN

So, the extraordinary and truly non-stop Sao Paolo nightlife has officially kicked my ass. I will need to cease my noctural cultural research for at least a day or two.

Too many nights out seeing this (\/) upon arrival at the hotel:
Img_0401

"Mommie, what's an immune system?"

It's 4:30 in the morning and I'm sitting here in my hotel room, already missing Rigo, sniffling, sneezing and gobbling the Airborne fizzy-eco-bio-homeopathic-candyisgoodforyou tablets he left for me. Maybe he felt guilty about burning my hand with his cigarette a few days ago and ruining my hand model career:

Img_0313

Bastard. Rigo, I will get my revenge at the next barbeque, for sure....

I missed the Bruce Weber presentation at the Iguatemi Filmefashion Festival, however was really glad I caught Penny Martin's sparkling presentation on what goes down at SHOWstudio.com, for those who didn't know. Without question, SHOWstudio.com is a must visit site for anyone who's into music, art, fashion, technology and the collaborative process.

Note to myself: Wear super-sexy YSL shoes like Penny and you might become a more convincing speaker....Go shopping immediately.

I turned on my computer, cranked up iTunes and noticed that I was sharing someone's media library by the name of "sonac1" -- and as I'm a naturally curious person, I clicked on the library to see if that person had any good music. But I'm not sure that I'm familiar with songs like "My Friend's Hot Mom" and "Embarrassed Blonde Teen Lolita." As I'm always looking for new and surprising music when I DJ, I thought I'd give a listen.

Um...

Img_0505

Well, the "Embarrassed Blonde" song clocked in at over 20 minutes long.... probably too long for the dance floor. My guess is that the owner of the computer is in the room directly above me on the 14th floor, as it sounds like furniture is being re-arranged.

Speaking of Sao Paolo...

A couple of meaty shots from the incredible Mercado Municipal:

(Notice how they keep the balls next to both the ears and the snouts. God, I love this city....)

Alexandre Herchcovitch and Johnny were ON FIRE, deejaying at the ALELUX party at OCEANS. Getting to hear them play for the packed-to-the-gills crowd was truly a joy. Thanks to SP boutique Melissa's Eduardo for the invitation and for introducing Rigo and I to just about everyone in the room. (Is it a local niteclub custom that someone slips his or her tongue into your mouth just after you've been introduced? If it is...I like it.)

Before the camera battery died, I was lucky to capture Sao Paolo club icons Hillary...

and Allison (with the long snout).

Shit. Sun's coming up.

Dinner with friends and DJ'ing at the Spy Bar in Stockholm

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Last night in Stockholm and Sandra Backlund and I were asked to be the opening DJ's at the Purple Fashion night. We were followed by Mandi Lennard and Kim Jones but the DJ booth had no needles so that put a bit of a damper on her set all those records and no needles to play. Kim Jones saved the day. Patrik Soderstam played after and then Nakkna/KCTV but by then I was back at the hotel and in my bed. Mandi nearly did not get in the Spy Bar because they told her that her 800 EUROS Azzedine sandles were flip flops and interdit in the bar.

Before our DJ set Kim Jones invited Sonny and me to the dinner for his 21h DJ set at the Vice dinner. Here he is with Jakob from V magazine. Afterwards we all went next door for the Vice party. Kim had a friend that just arrived from Sao Paulo so it got me into the mood of my trip on Tuesday. I cannot wait I've never been to Brazil and am impatient for my visit.

Robb Young, Mandi Lennard, Hermann Frankhauser, Joseph Quartana and I were the +46 Awards jury and we were all DJ's as well. Here are Mandi's Azzedine's that practically had her banned fromthe Spy Club. We all really missed Robb Young.....
